Pat Buchanan
St George ****

Session man impresses on his second solo outing.

Buchanan's among Nashville's finest guitarists and on this, his latest solo album, he also confirms he's a singer-songwriter who can deliver slices of romance in best McCartney fashion alongside a bristling line in powerpop.

All the right names have played their part in fashioning this album, which owes its name to an island just off Florida.  Old friends such as Bill Lloyd, Will Kimbrough and Swan Dive's Bill DeMain are drafted in as co-writers, the Buchanan-DeMain partnership being responsible for the most memorable material on offer, including the high-on-harmonies Patience, along with the dream of an opener that is Sweet Amnesia.  While there are minor weaknesses lyric-wise, in terms of melody and performance, St George is as classy as it gets.
